The Arrival of the Doctor, Defense of the Advisor
The PhD defense and awarding of the Doctorate to a student is a milestone -- academic, formal and ceremonial! What was historically a truly public defense of ideas, has now become a rather private (and mostly inaccessible) affair.
The ADDA -- Arrival of the Doctor, Defense of the Advisor -- is a small attempt at amelioration. Rather than adding one more burden of proof on the student, the advisor takes up the cudgels during the ADDA.
Following their formal PhD defense, the recent Doctor decides the title of a talk (related to the topic of the PhD work), to be prepared and delivered by the advisor at a location (open to the public) decided by the Doctor. The talk is not meant to be only about the science but is expected to be broadly interpreted and fun.
