ADDA:
The PhD defense and awarding of the Doctorate to a student is a milestone -- formal, academic and celebratory! What was historically a truly public defense of ideas, has now become a rather private (and mostly inaccessible) affair.
The ADDA -- Arrival of the Doctor, Defense of the Advisor -- is a small attempt at amelioration. Rather than adding one more burden of proof on the student, the advisor takes up the cudgels during the ADDA.
Following their formal PhD defense, the recent Doctor decides the title of a talk (related to the topic of the PhD work), to be prepared and delivered by the advisor at a location (open to the public) decided by the Doctor. The talk is not meant to be only about the science but is expected to be broadly interpreted and fun.
Teaching:
Quantitative Experimental Research Methods and Analysis (2024 - now)
Biological Physics (2018)
Classical Mechanics (REAP program) (2018 - now)
Meetings:
Max Planck Partner Group Symposium
This short symposium marked the start of our Max Planck Partner Group on the "Self-organization of Cellular Form and Function" together with the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization in Goettingen.
Monsoon School on the Physics of Life
Every year at the onset of Monsoon, we organize a 2 week long school for senior undergraduates from Physics/Maths/Computer Science/Engineering backgrounds to give them a flavor of the open problems in biology.
Dynamics Fridays
Amit Apte (ICTS), Sandeep Krishna (NCBS) and I organize monthly seminars about complex systems, dynamical systems, and computer science approaches to various problems, particularly in biology and physics.
SAMOSE
Amit Vutha, in the lab, together with David Farris and Venkat Ramaswamy, organizes a biweekly seminar series on mathematics and biology.
NCBS Meetings; ICTS Meetings
Quite often we have conferences and discussion meetings at NCBS and ICTS that we organize with colleagues on campus and outside.
